I have been involved with Latino Memphis on some level since I started working there in February 2003. I helped develop the first version of the Abriendo Puertas - Opening Doors program. The current program is the single best way of lifting Latino families out of poverty by creating a pathway to college for bright youth. Currently, Latinos in Memphis have the highest rate of poverty of any demographic. They also have one of the lowest unemployment rates at around 4%. Thus, the community is working, but mostly in low paying work. We've got to change that dynamic. There is a wave of Latino students coming through Shelby County Schools so we have a real opportunity to make going to college the norm for young Latinos/Latinas in Memphis.
