Bethany Winkin was diagnosed with POTS after being a three sport varsity athlete along with playing for a club field hockey team for her four years of high school. A national honor society student she was recruited and went on to play Division one field hockey at Bryant University, starting in twelve games and becoming an integral part of the offense as a first year player. Bethany's POTS symptoms began her senior year in high school, with tremors and shaking after intense periods of exercise. Bethany has always been very fit and someone who pushes the boundaries with her conditioning, her senior year found her exhausted beyond normal and suffering from tremors and uncontrollable shaking after intense periods of exertion. Her first year of college was manageable, but going back as a sophomore proved to be another story. The shaking and tremors worsened to the point of back spasms, digestive problems, crazy ups and downs with her heart rate and and an overwhelming feeling of exhaustion. In the two years since her symptoms began, it has been suggested that Bethany suffered from anxiety, exercise induced asthma, an adrenaline disorder, a possible brain stem infection, lyme disease and or mono, to name a few. Her case was considered by athletic trainers, neurologists, and primary care physicians. It took two years to be referred to Dr. Hohler at BU Medical Center and get a diagnosis. There are are not enough physicians that are aware of POTS and even fewer that treat this syndrome, which is beyond frustrating. Please think about joining us, making a donation or going to to learn more and spread awareness. Thank you all in advance!
