EVENT: Below the Belt 5k
EVENT DATE: May 15, 2016
Das Fassel is a wonderful community of friendship and epic fun…but now we have an opportunity to make it just that much more by supporting two of our fellow patrons—Susan Burgert & Kathy Binder—in their personal battles against cancer!
Jimmy and I invite you to join Team Das Fassel at this event and with a donation! Thanks!
Dr. Susan Burgert, M.D.
Three years ago, our (Chris & Suzanne Riley’s) dearest friend Dr. Susan Burgert (she’s a physician at Johns Hopkins) was diagnosed with endometrial cancer which is a cancer of the inner lining of the uterus. At that time she had radical surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
Recently she was allowed to join a clinical trial using a new immunotherapy drug which has been in the news. It has been used successfully in other types of cancers like melanoma and lung cancer. Sadly, she was taken off the clinical trial because her cancer was not responding to this new treatment. Unfortunately the cancer has progressed and she now has Stage IV metastatic cancer.
Last September, Kathy Binder (wife of Keith Binder) was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the bile ducts. Since then Kathy has been treated with chemotherapy and new radiation treatments. Thanks to others who helped fund prior research, these novel radiation treatments have shown promise for Kathy!
Susan and Kathy met through Das Fassel and, through their shared experiences, have become supportive friends over these past months.
Fortunately, we hear of other types of cancer (especially breast cancer) being controlled. Large sums of money are generated with broad awareness building campaigns which have resulted in new types of treatments and even early cures.
However, Kathy’s type of cancer and Susan's 'below the belt' cancer have not generated the type of awareness or research funds needed to allow for more progressive treatments. Susan decided to do something about this!
(Hint: This is where we come into this story!)
Susan is a founder and co-chair of this 1st Annual “Below the Belt Stride and Thrive” 5K and 1-Mile Run/Walk to raise money for research and better care for women battling these cancers.
How You Can Help
Please help if you can by joining Team Das Fassel at the event and/or by donating to this race that Susan had the vision to start. This race's sole purpose is to raise funds for more research and improved care for women’s cancer survivors. The money received will be dedicated to that effort--not to large management overheads.
Thank you for your help and consideration.
Hope to see you at the Run/Walk and thanks for your generosity!
