Superhero: (n) Type of hero that possesses extraordinary superhuman powers, is remarkably brave, has great courage or strength of character.
Did you know Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) are the most common birth defect in the entire world? CHD affect 1 in every 100 babies, which means that over 40,000 babies are born with CHD each year in the US alone. There is no cure and no known cause for CHD. Due to low awareness, critical life-saving research projects are severely underfunded.
Ethan (now a fiesty three year old) was diagnosed with CHD before leaving the hospital after his birth in February 2013. After months of monitoring the condition, it was determined that surgery was necessary and on his 6 month birthday, Ethan underwent open heart surgery to repair his VSD (ventricle septal defect). Thanks to the lifesaving procedure, he is now the same size as his twin brother, keeps up with this older brother, and still gives us (his parents) a run for our money! The boy is QUICK! :)
This is the second year of an annual Elstun family tradition, celebrating our sweet and fiery Ethan and raising awareness of CHD. Please consider being a Superhero yourself and join the SuperHero Heart Run this year, and bring awareness to CHD with us. Whether or not you're able to run, please also consider a donation to Heart Heroes Inc. to bring further awareness to CHD nationally, and to support families with Heart Heroes of their own.
Go Team E^6!
