BENEFITING: Every Mother Counts
EVENT: Philadelphia Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: Nov 20, 2016
Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. That's 800 women every day. The good news is that 98% of these deaths can be prevented. We have the tools and the know-how to save these mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, teachers, doctors, caregivers and community leaders—if we make it a priority.
Every Mother Counts is a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. We inform, engage, and mobilize new audiences to take actions and raise funds that support maternal health programs around the world.
Every Mother Counts donations supports maternal health improvements by providing solutions and resources to transportation, education and medical supply barriers across the globe.
As a Running Ambassador for Team EMC, I look to the running world for opportunities to create awareness for Every Mother Counts and the mission I stand behind with my whole heart. I have chosen the Philidelphia Marathon 2016 as not only my first marathon but also an opportunity to run for Team EMC. I will proudly run 26.2 miles for EMC and hope that with every step along the way I can raise awareness for the need to improve maternal health world wide.
As a nurse practitioner student, I started my journey into the world of maternal health sitting on the floor of a birth center in Portland, Maine in doula training. I believed then as I do now that to create safe childbirth journeys for every woman we are all a part of the solution. We each have a role in supporting the next generation to enter this world safely: as grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, health care providers, doulas, teachers, and support communities for the women we love.
On November 20th, I will carry with me the memories of the birth journeys I have had the honor of knowing first hand. B, E, E, N, L, S, and E's births taught me that all women should have the same access to a supported and safe delivery. All women and all babies, everywhere. I hold these memories in my heart and the belief that all births can have the same outcome: a healthy mom and baby. This belief will carry me through 26.2 miles even as my body tires and asks me to stop. The mission of Every Mother Counts and the women and babies the organization reaches will carry me to the finish line.
Please consider supporting Every Mother Counts and mothers world wide. I know you will be cheering me along during my journey in Philadelphia and I hope that you will support Every Mother Counts with a donation. Every donation, no matter how big or small, can affect change. Here's to changing the world of maternal health one step at a time.
