Since its formation in 1990, Tusk has invested more than £25 ($40) million into a wide range of projects across the continent. Tusk currently supports over 50 field projects in 18 African countries that work to alleviate poverty through sustainable development and education (over 72,000 students attend schools and education centres supported by Tusk) amongst rural communities, as well as to protect the wildlife they live alongside. As the ever-expanding human population and its demand for more land brings increasing conflict with wildlife, Tusk’s aim is to forge an inextricable link between the preservation of Africa’s natural heritage and the future of its land, culture and people.
This year's Safaricom Marathon and Half Marathon will take place on the 25th June 2016 at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. What began as a simple idea back in 2000 has now grown from 180 runners in 2000 raising $50,000 to 1,200 runners in 2014 raising $725,000. In addition to this, since the inaugural marathon in 2000, US$4.9m has been raised. The unique marathon is exceptional in many ways -- it combines an unusual fundraising initiative with one of Kenya’s greatest sporting passions - running.
