EVENT DATE: Oct 08, 2017
Welcome to my fundraising page. As some of you may know, after a few years of saying I'd "eventually" run a marathon, I've finally decided to put my money where my mouth is and will be running the Chicago Marathon this coming October 8th!
In making my first marathon attempt, I am training with and fundraising for Erika's Lighthouse, a not-for-profit organization focused on raising awareness around adolescent depression and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Erika's Lighthouse was founded in 2004 by two parents whose daughter Erika lost her life to depression - they wanted to create a beacon of hope for the many other young people who struggle with the disease from a young age. Depression is pervasive, impacting 20% of people before age 22. Yet while teens learn about everything from cancer to heart disease in the classroom, most will not learn about the single largest medical cause of death to people their age, nor will they be coached on how to handle it. Erika's Lighthouse provides programs free of charge to middle schools and high schools all over the country which spread the message that although depression is common, and can be serious, it is treatable - you are not alone.
Depression and mental illness impact us all more than we know as many people are crippled by them on a daily basis but are too afraid to ask for help. Having come to terms with my own depression later in life, I know firsthand how important it is to not only recognize the symptoms in yourself, but also to feel supported and comfortable in speaking out.
With all of that being said, I am hoping you'll please consider supporting me in Chicago and help Get Depression Out of the Dark. I've included the link to my fundraising page below - no pressure at all, but if you have even a few dollars it would truly mean the world to me :)
We believe that every young person deserves mental health and the right to a life full of purpose. We work to spread the message that although depression is common, and can be serious, you can get better. You are not alone.
Committed to educating and raising awareness about adolescent depression, encouraging good mental health and breaking down the stigma that surrounds mental health issues, Erika’s Lighthouse: A Beacon of Hope for Adolescent Depression is rapidly becoming one of the Midwest’s premier providers of middle school and high school depression awareness curricula, teen-to-teen outreach and online resources.
Join us in this movement and be a part of something bigger. Together we can Get Depression Out of the Dark!
