Why The Grassroot Project? I wholeheartedly support the work being done to provide education, mentorship, social empowerment, and safe spaces for DC youth. Through sport base curriculums, college athletes coach at DC public and public charter schools to erase the stigma around HIV and deliver prevention classes. The need is urgent, as the HIV prevalence in still nearly 3%, despite consistent declines in HIV rates since TGP began in 2009. After already deciding to run for TGP, I found one of their most recent curriculums, Grassroots Girls, to be just as influential. In this curriculum, athlete-coaches discuss topics of consent, relationship violence, respect, and positive sexuality. Education in health rights = influence in social change and public health.
Looking to the future: Not only is TGP continuing its research and evaluation for their HIV work, but they are also in motion to launch additional health education curricula in physical health and mental health.
