BENEFITING: Pulmonary Hypertension Association Inc
EVENT DATE: Oct 10, 2015
Laurie was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension in March, 2015. Laurie and her husband were in the midst of planning a family when she was sent for a standard routine physical and EKG. At the time she had not realized or paid much attention to the signs that she had PH. Shortness of breath and irregular blood pressure readings had been occurring for the past 6-9 months and she was seeing her primary physician regularly along with focusing on diet and exercise. Her EKG reading was abnormal and subsequently sent for an echocardiogram. On March 3rd, 2015 Laurie went in for a routine Echo & Stress test and was rushed to the ER due to the right side of her heart being enlarged 2x the size. She was transported to two different hospitals in her 4 day stay and ultimately diagnosed with Severe Pulmonary Hypertension. She is now adjusting to her “new normal” and riding the rollercoaster on this journey in her PHight with PH.
What is Pulmonary Hypertension? It is a rare, debilitating disease in which high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs causes the right side of your heart to enlarge. PH is a chronic and life-changing disease that can lead to right heart failure if left untreated. The Right side of her heart works overtime to provide enough oxygen to her lungs.
Where did it come from? She will never know the answer to that. We went down the risk factors associated with PH and Laurie hasn’t met one of them. It was most likely a genetic marker that has come to fruition now.
Treatment Plan. Her journey is new, She's adjusting to meds which comes with some pretty bad side effects and it has been a cumbersome task. It’s a balancing act that takes some time to get used to. There is no cure for this illness and we are doing our part to learn as much as we can about this disease, spread the knowledge and raise as much money for Pulmonary Hypertension research.
We appreciate your love and support and we hope to bring about some positive progress in the fight against PH. All your donations go to the research fund at the national organization. PHA puts the dollars into the hands of the scientists that are working to make strides in this field.
We are forever grateful for your support
