BENEFITING: Intertribal Friendship House
ORGANIZER: Intertribal Friendship House
EVENT DATE: Apr 02, 2017
I'm running in support of the Intertribal Friendship House (IFH), a cultural community center that has been a home to the intertribal community in Oakland for 60 years. The mission of IFH is to promote the ability of Native people to thrive in an urban environment through ceremony, traditions and cultural connection, to provide a safe environment to strengthen cultural identity, promote health, inter-generational healing and support the development of extended family.
For urban Native people IFH has served as an Urban Reservation and Homeland. In many cases it is one of the few places that keeps us connected to our culture and traditions through pow wow dance, drumming, beading classes, community gardening, social gatherings, cultural events, and ceremonies that are held at IFH.
There are very few longstanding and native run organizations like this in the Bay Area that unify diverse groups of tribes together under one roof. Growing up in the East Bay I attended many events at IFH that have helped shape my cultural identity. Please help me give back to IFH by supporting our Oakland Running Festival team, thank you!
