Some of you may have heard me talk about iMentor throughout the years and for others it may be the first time that you hear about it. iMentor is a mentoring program that matches local professionals with high school students to empower first-generation students from low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions.
Mentor/mentee pairs email each other once a week via the iMentor website and meet in person once a month at sponsored events. These are the minimum requirements for the program but more frequent communication occurs over time and is encouraged. Mentoring pairs also have the option to continue their relationship through college completion.
I have worked with iMentor since 2011 and have been able to witness the positive impact this program has had on NYC youth. I am currently in my third match with a 12th grade student at Manhattan Bridges High School, who has submitted her college applications earlier this year and is now waiting for admissions results!
Please consider donating to iMentor – or better yet, becoming a mentor yourself!!
It costs iMentor $1,000 to provide one mentor-mentee pair with access to iMentor’s proven college success curriculum and resources. Here is what your support can do for New York City’s students:
- $25 allows a mentee to attend a year of iMentor events
- $100 supplies a mentee with a year's access to monthly career and college preparation events
- $500 provides a college application event for an entire Junior class
- $1,000 supports the mentorship of one student as they work one-on-one with their mentor toward academic and personal success
