We are down to the last day in our 2017 NYC Challenge!!! We still need your help to make our goal. I've seen first hand the value of this organization. See more
Elimar is one of my daughters....... one of my 'extra children'. No, I didn't give birth to Elimar, but I am her mentor through iMentor. I have been working with Elimar for about a year and a half. Our goal is to get her accepted into college upon graduating from high school. Here's why you join me in helping Elimar and iMentor. She is a bright, articulate young lady. She has a long commute to school, and goes in Saturday for tutoring help when she struggles in a subject. I'm so impressed by her commitment and perseverance. English is her second language, but she doesn't let that get in the way of her goals. Why do i care? I care because I am the first generation born in the US. My dad came from Puerto Rico to the US in the fifties with a 4th grade education. He worked 3 jobs to support his wife and 4 children. We were poor. We were often on government assistance....you see my dad had a heart condition and was often hospitalized before succumbing to his illness at the age of 49. He told us that we would most likely have to work harder to be seen as equals to our more privileged peers. But he said, that to make a difference, we would need to get educated, and be at the table to give back. Soooo, that's what I'm doing....giving back. I can promise you that the despair in poor areas is palpable, and can easily drown out the positive voices our children hear. Please help me to be the louder voice. Help me show our children that they can overcome their circumstances!!! Help me help them realize their dreams of a better life!!!!!!
