EVENT: iMentor Challenge NYC 2017

Nicole Milazzo

Hello Loved Ones!! About 2 years ago, began my 4 year-relationship working with iMentor program where I was matched with my mentee, Delaiah in her freshman year of HS! iMentor matches educated, vetted and highly screened mentors with mostly minority students from disadvantaged areas, under a certain income, with parents who have not graduated college. Delaiah is from Sri Lanka, with hard-working immigrant parents, living in the Bronx. She picked her HS Charter School herself knowing she would get a great, well-rounded education here. She often travels about 2 hours on 3 modes of transportation each way to school. Do you remember all the REGULAR stresses of being a HS student?! Peer pressures for this and that? iMentor has a strong focus on higher education, setting/achieving personal/professional goals and creating strong moral character for each student. I'm so lucky to have been paired with Delaiah. She is incredibly hard working, sweet and both she and her parents are very appreciative of the time I have been spending each week to help Delaiah with her projects, goals and over all relating to a young lady who strives to make a positive difference. In NYC, the current guidance counselor to student ratio is 400 to 1, this leaves about 30 minutes a year for each student and clearly that's just not enough to guide the next generation into such an evolving world. It takes about $1,000 per Mentee/Mentor pair to run the program which provides all the background tests, extensive matching, after school events, one class per week where mentees and mentors communicate with each other about personal growth topics and so much more. As you all know, i have volunteered around the world, with a variety of organizations and I can honestly say, iMentor stands leaps and bounds above the rest, always keeping high expectations for their operating standards and high reaching for best and sustainable results for the students. I have recommended 5 friends to also join the program and SO EXCITED to say they are also sharing my enthusiasm and seeing the difference we are able to make with the students! Delaiah very often thanks me for my time and as much as I tell her, it's truly my pleasure to support her in achieving her goals, setting action plans for her dreams, she is still in often in awe, considering herself "lucky" to have a mentor, in a City/World where so many kids her age do not have someone to talk to. I'm hoping we can help iMentor continue this program by fundraising at least $1,200 this year! If you donate now, I have someone who will match the donation for the next week or so! ALSO, If you know anyone in the NYC area who you think might make a great mentor, please send them my way too!! Sending love and gratitude from Bali (or somewhere else, depending when you read this!) Nic
