I have been mentoring for iMentor since the fall of 2013 and made a four-year commitment to support and encourage a high school student from a low-income community to help him attend college as I am a strong believer in the importance of education for self-development, self-fulfillment and self-realization. I grew up in the country close to Quebec City in Canada and come from a middle class family. Education allowed me to realize my dreams to live and work in Europe (I lived in Amsterdam for ten years from 2002-2012) and in New York City (since 2012). By joining iMentor, I wanted to help and offer the chance to a young man from a low-income community to realize his dreams and have the career and life he wishes for (and deserves).
I have been matched with my mentee, Steven, who graduated in June 2015 from Hyde Leadership Charter School, located in the Bronx. Steven is now a sophomore at Alfred State College, a SUNY school, and is doing well in his Computer Information Systems program. Being a mentor made me appreciate more the chance I had to receive an advanced education. It also helped me understand better the challenges faced by the youth growing up in low-income communities and feeling more involved in the New York City community and society at large. What I particularly like with the program is that it allows me to impact on someone’s life (i.e., my mentee), and help him create a better future for himself.
iMentor relies on the generous donations of individuals like you to provide students with mentors, instruction, resources, curriculum, and technology tools that help them reach their college goals. The proceeds of my campaign will help funding mentoring relationships that are empowering students in low-income communities, like Steven, to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions.
It costs iMentor $1,000 to provide one mentor-mentee pair with access to iMentor’s proven college success curriculum and resources. With your help, I hope to raise enough money to allow one mentor-mentee match in the future.
Thank you for your support and generosity!
