As many of you know, Juliana has become a fencer this past year! After being introduced to fencing last school year on her school's fencing team (weapon: foil), Juliana asked for fencing lessons for her birthday gift last fall and through research, we discovered the Tim Morehouse Fencing Club right in our own section of NYC - and Juliana has been fencing ever since (weapon: sabre). She has a lot to learn, but is loving the sport - and with each lesson, learns something new. Juliana now dedicates 2-3 days a week on top of her flute, piccolo and orchestra rehearsals to fencing classes and lessons, and comes home excited each time to tell me what she learned, or a positive comment from a coach.
Juliana has never expressed much of an interest in sports, but fencing has changed all that. It's definitely a sport I can see her continuing and growing with. And the staff and coaches at Tim Morehouse Fencing Club have been amazing and are instilling great skills in their students.
The Tim Morehouse Fencing Club also runs Fencing In The Schools (FITS). FITS is a 501c3 that provides fencing lessons, life skills workshops and mentoring to low-income schools and students. Founded in 2013 by Olympic medalist Tim Morehouse, they've brought fencing to over 15,000 students, in more than 50 schools, across 9 states. Since 2015, they've concentrated on building the next-generation of fencing professionals by starting varsity fencing teams in diverse, urban schools across New York City.
FITS is celebrating its 5th Anniversary on May 16, 2016 at the Tim Morehouse Fencing Club in NYC at a gala. Honoring Project Runway's Tim Gunn (who is also a fencer at the Club), this gala raises money to support varsity fencing programs in Harlem and The Bronx. Featuring Olympic athletes and fencing matches, it's sure to be a great night, raising funds for an incredible organization. FITS has as a goal to prepare college ready student-athletes and to make the Olympic sport of fencing and its winning values more accessible to children around the country.
Please, if you can, donate to the FITS fund - by donating to Team Juliana. We'd love to raise money to support Tim Morehouse's amazing work. Thank you, as always.
