Team LILLYLULU

THE STORY:

In my second time running the New York City Marathon I am running on behalf of a young lady that has the heart of a lion, Lilly Lashar. Your support is greatly appreciated. The oldest of three sisters, Lilly Lashar (far left) is a determined, strong 14 year old 8th grade girl who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on April 9th 2015 out of nowhere. Lilly's quiet determination, huge heart and leadership have enabled her and her family to embrace their new normal by taking control of her care and her day to day life. Through the support of the Lashar's closest friends, her Team at Children's Hospital and the "JDRF Family", she has embraced answering "HOW DO YOU LIVE BEYOND TYPE 1?" While the day to day struggle to manage her care can take its toll, Lilly is doing her part to contribute to her cause by doing everything she has always done every day (lacrosse, tennis, skiing, hard work at school, babysitting ect.) while being a gracefully loud voice for the face of diabetes through her actions. Her dad calls her his Type 1 Warrior and with what she is doing on her own, with the support of her family, she is quite an amazing face of T1D. At the urging of the Lashar's "JDRF Family" this past fall, Lilly formed "Team LILLYLULU” to participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation ("JDRF") Type One Type None Walk. With the support of family and friends she raised money (more than doubled her goal) for research and felt empowered to walk amongst others with T1D. An amazing experience allowing her to begin to step out from behind T1D and to begin to realize she is T1D and proud to be the "Face of T1D". Her "Team LILLYLULU" is also raising money through an effort in combination with JDRF and the Big Game Battle Invitational Fishing Tournament this August with 100% of funds raised going directly to JDRF. Lilly has also just recently been asked by her Children's Hospital team to join The Diabetes Program Teen Advisory Committee at Boston Children’s Hospital where she undergoes her care. She will serve as a member of a forum to explore areas of interest to teen and young adult patients with Type 1 and help develop programs to help guide teens to take care of their diabetes independently. Lilly was recently nominated and chosen by the Hingham Middle School to represent Hingham as the one Town ambassador for a non-profit organization called Project 351 www.project351.com . Project 351 represents each municipality/town in the state and has a vision to build a generation of service leaders to strengthen the Commonwealth with leadership, kindness and compassion. She is launching her spring service at her middle school by collect clothing for Cradles to Crayons which provides low income/homeless children with essential items. While Lilly seemingly makes T1D look easy, it is not. It is very hard and it never stops-every minute of every day it is there. The road in front of Lilly and her family is one that is rooted in HOPE and leadership. JDRF is the backbone of HOPE that provides support, advocacy, acceleration of life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. In a short period of time, Lilly and her family have embraced T1D and have become a very strong voice for JDRF and its mission. Lilly Lashar is the Face of Type 1 and she is Living Beyond Type 1!
