BENEFITING: Daraja Education Fund
EVENT DATE: May 15, 2016
Daraja Academy is a boarding secondary school for Kenyan girls with top academic scores and exceptional leadership skills but no means to continue their education. The vast majority of secondary schools (high schools) in Kenya require substantial fees. Even indirect costs of a secondary education in Kenya are twelve to twenty times as much as the monthly income of parents in rural areas. Family responsibilities, early marriages and pregnancy, lack of gender appropriate facilities in schools, gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS, and orphanhood can, and often do, pose additional barriers to a girl's education.
To that end, Daraja Academy provides full scholarships to girls of material poverty, covering all the costs of school in addition to shelter, food, healthcare and counseling services, allowing students to focus on their academic and personal potential, without being hindered by the everyday barriers of poverty.
The academy believes change occurs in a developing country through the people themselves. Daraja Academy has been established to provide young Kenyan women the tools to create change and become the country’s future leaders.
On Sunday, May 15th, each Daraja student will run 12 kilometeres through the villages surrounding Nanyuki, Kenya to raise funds for Daraja Academy. On the same day, we will race the same distance in San Francisco's Bay to Breakers, running in solidarity with Daraja student, Rose. Separated by an ocean, united by a cause.
The third born of five siblings, Rose comes from Makueni in Kenya’s Eastern Province. When at home, Rose is responsible for looking after her younger siblings, washing clothes, and cooking. She also helps her siblings fetch water from their nearest source - a river about six kilometers away from their home. Rose is a diligent student who is often one of the first in the classrooms in the mornings and during study hall. She enjoys participating in class and speaking in front of her fellow students. She loves “arguing for the greater good,” and hopes one day to practice law.
We are asking you to support Rose as she races for her education in Race for Daraja. All funds support operations and scholarship funds at Daraja Academy.
When you donate, you make Rose's race a little easier.
Thank you for your support.
