"Childhood Hunger? Really.? .. not in our area!"
It is indeed shocking to realize that children in our community go to bed hungry. In our corner of New Hamsphire 1 in 6 households experience food insecurity while households with children are twice as likely to be categorized as such. . Food pantries and emergency food services are turned to at an increasingly alarming rate- 146,000 recipients last year alone. The 2018 Federal Budget includes cuts across the board for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and our state is struggling to fill in the gaps. Hunger takes a particularly savage toll on the bodies and minds of our children as physical, developmental, behavioral and learning problems go hand in hand with poor nutrition.
Getting healthy food to children and families in need is a top priority for Keene Elm City Rotary & Greater Keene Rotaract Clubs. Working with our sister organization MUCH (Monadnock Understands Childhood Hunger) in 2016 we began a school vacation food box initiative which provides 18 healthy meals and snacks for at risk children and families during the week long school breaks. The 2017-2018 vacation food box program provided for over 300 families from Keene, Jaffrey, Walpole and Winchester, an increase of service by over 300% from the previous year. In 2016 Keene Elm City initiated another project - Thanksgiving in July - which subsidizes summer feeding programs in the area.
This summer, let's have our third annual Thanksgiving in July be the most successful yet. Be part of our goal to raise $4,000 by July 26th!
For a donation of $100 you can provide 5 family meal boxes that will last the week. A donation of $30 can provide a case of tuna. Just $20 will provide a weeks worth of food for 1 thankful family with children.
