Walk with us and embrace the power of Friendship!
"Grandma let’s go for a walk today, it’s so nice out!"
"No! I just want to go to Papa Ginos!"
My Grandma was a routine woman. She had been ever since she married the man of her dreams at 18yrs old. But in her older age, my grandma fell victim to social isolation. I didn’t realize really how bad it was until I started working at FriendshipWorks and matched myself with her to motivate me to visit her more frequently. Sunday afternoon became our ritual, Papa Ginos became our regular spot and we became their number one customers. Out of all the things to get, it was always an Italian sub she ordered. When she passed away in the Fall of 2015, I know she went out with a smile because she had me, not only her grandson but her best friend and side kick each week!
Helping elders has become a passion of mine since beginning my adventures with FriendshipWorks nearly 3 years ago. I tell my friends now that I don’t have my grandma anymore, but I have hundreds of them (through work)! Whether listening to their stories, helping them out with an errand, or placing them with a nice volunteer friend for weekly visits and good company, I recognized the importance of friendship and socialization no matter what age you are!
Help me by walking to end elder isolation and donate to help FriendshipWorks do the same through its numerous volunteer-elder programs. Even if you can’t walk, DONATE TO MY TEAM and help me raise awareness by telling others you know about the important work we do to help elders be happy and thrive in older age.
For every $25 donation, I will hug an elder in Boston and say it’s from you! (if you want me to say your name, if not, I’ll give an anonymous hug on your behalf)
