BENEFITING: REAL OPTIONS FOR CITY KIDS
ORGANIZER: REAL OPTIONS FOR CITY KIDS
EVENT DATE: Jun 17, 2017
What if you had the chance to push yourself to the farthest limits in an extreme physical challenge? Well, I have that opportunity … and I am accepting the challenge. On June 13th of 2017, I will begin an unforgettable and meaningful journey from San Diego, CA to Annapolis, MD … on my bike. Having turned 40 this last November, I find myself thinking in more reflective and meaningful ways than I did while in my 20s. Two things have struck me recently: (1) Life is fragile and every second matters and (2) there can be “more” to cycling than personal fitness. These realizations have motivated me to use my passion for cycling to raise money for a worthy cause that is much bigger than myself. And I hope you can join me!
The best part of all is that I have joined a charity race team and raising money to support Real Options for City Kids (R.O.C.K.), a fantastic organization serving at-risk kids in San Francisco. The mission of R.O.C.K. is to nurture the healthy development of children by listening attentively to their needs and by providing opportunities to those who might not otherwise have access.
The next five months will include training 15-20 hours per week until the race in June of 2017. RAAM is a 3020 mile time trial where the clock never stops. RAAM is the longest human powered race in the world featuring athletes from over 20 countries. My teammate (Dave O’Mara) and I will climb more than 170,000 vertical feet and cross the Anza-Borrego desert, the Rocky Mountains, the Ozark's and the Appalachians. Racers can expect temperatures in excess of 110 degrees and the occasional wind and hail storm in Kansas and Ohio. Our caravan will consist of 2 racers, 3 vans, and 10 volunteer crew members (including a masseuse, mechanic and crew chief). We have enlisted a crew member to create a short film about the experience – stay tuned.
Although safety and completion of the race are paramount, we intend to RACE.. We are not here to finish, but to see where our limits lie… We look forward to sharing our progress in real time. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think may be interested hearing about this as we try and reach our $60k goal.
