EVENT: Team Running Strong 2016 MCM
EVENT DATE: Oct 30, 2016
I completed my Marathon Ois near and dear to me. My husband served in the Navy for 29 years. He is retired now but we were married for 25 of his 29 years. Still married and still love our country. I am very familiar with the needs of Native American Indians both on and off the reservations.
All funds raised by myself and other Team Running Strong/Marine Corps Marathon members will benefit Running Strong for American Indian Youth.
Mission & History Running Strong's mission is to help American Indian people meet their immediate needs-food, water, and shelter- while implementing and supporting programs designed to create opportunities for self-sufficiency and self-esteem.
Running Strong was founded under Christian Relief Services in 1986 by Billy Mills . Billy made it his priority to give back to his community and create a better future for American Indian Youth.
About Billy Mills .......... Billy Mills, Oglala Lakota ( Sioux) was raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . Billy did not have an easy childhood. Surrounded by poverty and orphaned at the age of 12, he started running to channel his energy into something positive. In high school, his gift for running became more apparent as he set records in numerous track events . He went on to earn a track scholarship from the Uinversity of Kansas and then served as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Billy shocked the world over 50 years ago with a come-from-behind Gold Medal victory in the 10,000 meters at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo
