Dear Family and Friends,
Running a marathon has been on my bucket list for a long time, so this fall I have decided to run for a cause. I will be running the Sleeping Bear Marathon with the Hope Water Project. I am dedicating my race to help provide clean water to the Pokot tribe in Africa. They are a tribe of one million people and only 10% have access to clean water.
Lack of safe water is the number one cause of preventable death in the world. In fact, more than 663 million people around the world suffer due to insuffiecient access to clean water. The Hope Water Project is committed to providing clean water by partnering with the communities and drilling wells in the areas with the most need.
We are so grateful to be living in Traverse City where we are never more than minutes away from beautiful, clean, fresh water. It's easy to take that for granted and it's unfathomable to me that every 90 seconds a child dies from an unsafe water related disease. Unlike the Pokot people we don't have to worry about cholera, thypoid, polio and dsysentry with ever sip we take.
When a community gains access to clean water the infant mortality rates typically drop by half, crops thrive, children can attend school instead of having to help gather water and women can care for their families instead of walking miles for water. For the Pokot, water is hope and life!
Deb is going to join me and run the half marathon. We hope that you would consider partnering with us. I say partner because we pledge not only to run the race but also match dollar for dollar your donation.
Thank you for considering,
John (and Deb) Socks
