THE STORY:

Hi!!! I would say that running has long been a huge part of my life- it seems as natural to me as sleeping, drinking, and eating. I have generally considered myself a regular healthy 22 year old girl who lives an active lifestyle, certainly not the sort of person who had be at risk for a blood clot. However, just last April, only a couple days after I was running in the Wilderness Park area near Claremont with some of my Pomona-Pitzer cross country teammates, I was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis. Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple as one diagnosis; I was actually misdiagnosed twice with a sciatic nerve injury until I finally went to the ER to receive my first Lovenox injection. From there, I spent my senior week partying in the ICU at the Keck Hospital of USC (instead of San Diego where the rest of my classmates were) and received catheter directed thrombolysis with TPA to lyse my clot and had a 11 cm metal stent placed to keep my left iliac vein open, which had been 90% compressed. I have since been diagnosed with May Thurner Syndrome, Nutcracker Syndrome, and Factor V Leiden Thrombophilia, all of which are merely managable, and not treatable, and will upt me at an increased risk for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism for the rest of my life. While I was in the hospital, I was scared that I would never be able to walk normally again without pain, let alone return to the sport of running that I loved so much. Enough of the sob story; since then, I have been fortunate enough to have recovered incredibly from my previous experience and spent this past fall training with the Montgomery County Road Runner Club's XMP program. I ran the Marine Corps Marathon in October of 2016 and qualified for the Boston Marathon, largely on account of the wonderful people who took me under their wing and taught me to love our 6AM Saturday long runs. I just recently ran the Rock and Roll Marathon in DC and have now qualified for the NYC marathon as well. I tell myself how fortunate I am every day to be once again doing the sport I love, to be so healthy and not suffering any residual pain, clot damage, or other symptoms from my previousDVT, and in fact, to even be here, since many, many people who have a blood clot are not so fortunate. Now that running has helped me recover both physically and emotionally from my traumatic experience, I want to take the opportunity to raise money in order to improve the future of other people. I have been accepted to join Team Stop the Clot to run in the Boston marathon and fundraise for the National Blood Clot Alliance - which is dedicated to promoting awareness of blood clots and blood clotting disorders and funding research to improve early and effective diagnosis and itreatments in order to improve the quality of life of people who have suffered from blood clots. Please donate to my cause and feel free to personally message me if you have any questions about Team Stop the Clot or my personal experience. Thanks!!!! :D
