Helping refugees to resettle in the United States, is one of the biggest services provided by the Arab American Community Center. This service has been expanded with the increased conflicts throughout the Arab world. Following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that more than one million Iraqis have been displaced globally. AACC has helped several Iraqi families to settle in the United States. This is one of their stories.
Hana and her family lived in what she describes as a prison for several years. Finally, Hana, her husband and young son fled the city Mosul. While fleeing to Erbil, the family had a car accident. This accident left Hana with chronic pain and discomfort. Though Hana sought medical attention in Erbil, she knew that she needed to get to the United States to receive proper health care.
With the assistance of the United Nations, Hana and her family relocated to Orlando, FL. Once in Orlando, Hana utilized the services of AACC to learn English, secure and furnish an apartment, employment assistance, financial support and healthcare.
Hana was very concerned about wearing her hijab in America. She wondered if she would be accepted in her new home. Hana is happy to report that she has found Orlando to be a friendly place. She is hopeful about the future and lights up when she speaks of her dreams for herself and her family.
