BENEFITING: Tipping Point Community
ORGANIZER: Tipping Point Community
EVENT DATE: Jul 31, 2016
My roommate Casey (I'm on the left; she's on the right) convinced me to join her in a quest to run 13.1 miles while raising $1,000 for Tipping Point, a nonprofit that's working to help people in the Bay Area break out of the cycle of poverty. Anyone who's seen SF and its surrounding communities change so rapidly in the past five years can surely recognize the extreme wealth disparities that divide this place. People in their twenties who make six-figures and pay $4,000-rent live alongside neighbors who don't have homes, accessible healthcare, or the kind of education that would allow them change their circumstances.
I've always been impressed by Tipping Point's smart approach to giving -- a bit like an investment company, it filters through the many charities in the Bay Area and chooses the most effective ones; then it gives them money and coaches them on how to make the biggest impact with those funds. Also, Tipping Point's board members all contribute money that covers the organization's fundraising and operations costs, so 100% of every donation goes directly to the cause.
So if you've got a few dollars to spare, please contribute to my fundraiser for Tipping Point and help make our little local world a better place. (And if schadenfreude is more your thing than altruism, just think of of your donations fueling my suffering as I force myself to run 13.1 miles -- which is something I've never done before!)
