BENEFITING: Tipping Point Community
ORGANIZER: Tipping Point Community
EVENT DATE: Jul 31, 2016
On July 31st, I am running the San Francisco Marathon with Team Tipping Point to fight poverty in the Bay Area. With 1.3 million people too poor to meet their basic needs in our community, Team Tipping Point goes the extra mile to make sure no one finishes last.
Tipping Point Community is a non-profit organization that partners with the most promising organizations in the Bay Area to help break the cycle of poverty and achieve economic self-sufficiency. I am very excited about supporting Tipping Point Community because poverty in the Bay Area is an issue that is too familiar and close to my heart.
Until recently, I was also one of the people who struggled to make ends meet in the Bay Area. As immigrants who moved to SF in 2003, my parent struggled to find jobs and worked in various roles that paid close to minimum wage. In those days, every dollar counted in making the budget meet every month and we had to discipline ourselves to not spend anything other than rent and basic food. However, I was fortunate in that I had relatives who provided me with a place to stay, teachers who went out of their ways to help me with my learning, and friends' families who would give me free books and magazines to read. All their supports really added up to tip the scales and my place in this world today is here because of them.
The worst of time for my family have passed, but the scale of this issue only seem to have grown larger in the Bay Area as the years passed. While the region prides itself as the world’s leading innovation hub, in its shadow, there are families that struggle to provide a decent place to live and healthy meals to eat, children who lack resources to excel in schools and engage in extracurricular activities, and the homeless who cannot get access to shelters and mental care.
As a result, the Bay Area is in dire need of changes in policies at both city and state levels, and importantly, changes in public willingness to push these initiatives forward. However, in the meantime, I believe a little kindness could do a wonder in improving the lives of others who live in this region. That’s why I decided to do this fundraiser through my favorite activity of running to do my part in giving support to the community and paying back for those who helped me in the past by paying it forward. After all, as I have learned through my own experiences, generosity for others is at the core of the Bay Area culture and it's something that we must continue to value even as the economy continues to change.
In the process, I hope you can join me in this cause by donating whatever you can, however little, to this fundraiser. Thanks to Tipping Point’s research and operation structure, every dollar you donate will go directly to non profits organizations that are working effectively to alleviate the poverty issues that we face in the Bay Area. Thank you very much and the Bay Area will be grateful because we will be a better community because of you.
