"Home is where the heart is." Michigan embodies this mantra more than any other state. If you are a true Michigander, you know that no matter how far you travel from the Mitten, it will always be a place to call home. And while it is home to so many of us, there are many who call it home, yet they are homeless. It is my mission to play a role in ending the Homeless epidemic in our state.
This is the first running event I have ever participated in. So instead of doing a 5k I thought I would go big and take on the full 26.2 miles of the Detroit Marathon. I figure if I am willing to go big for my first time then my friends and family would maybe follow suit. Please join me by supporting my team raise money for the Empowerment Plan.
The Empowerment Plan is a Detroit based organization that employs and trains homeless single parents to manufacture a garment that serves as both a coat and a sleeping bag. These coats are then distributed back to those in need across the nation.
Through training and steady employment the individuals they hire are able to elevate themselves from the cycle of poverty. Within the first few months of working with their program, everyone is able to move off the streets or out of shelters into secure and furnished housing. They focus on empowering their team with the confidence and skills necessary for a more sustainable, financially stable and healthier life.
They currently have a total staff of 25 and are on track to manufacture and distribute 6,500 coats this year. They are already in 29 states and 4 Canadian provinces and are excited to continue to expand their reach. We believe in giving second chances to those who want it, and warmth to those who need it. #spreadthewarmth
