Race2Rebuild Team 2 athletes are resolved to rebuild a home destroyed by Hurricane Sandy for one specific family by racing the Aquaphor NYC Triathlon. After the food was delivered, the electricity came back and the clean-up got on, it became painfully clear that many did not have the means to ever return to their homes, that insurance companies weren't paying or that the unthinkable happened and a family didn't have flood insurance. So family by family, house by house, Rebuild Together is looking to raise money to rebuild for those families with no options as it has for 25 years across the US. Each athlete raises money in support of Rebuilding Together. The Rebuilding Together Sponsored Family will be there on race day and later the team has the opportunity to volunteer with Rebuilding Together to rebuild their home.
An Update on NY/NJ Post Sandy: The grueling recovery efforts continue even today. The process has been arduous, and many people are still struggling. In New York alone, over 300,000 homes were damaged or destroyed by the storm, the majority of which did not have flood insurance and belong to low-income and working class families. In New Jersey, 350,000 homes were damaged, including 275,000 that were uninsured. Many of these families continue to grapple with denied insurance claims, frustration with FEMA, drained savings accounts, and an endless struggle for life to resume. Rebuilding destroyed neighborhoods and homes is a long, exhausting, and costly process that has become the reality for many children, parents and grandparents, fellow humans.
Who is Race To Rebuild? For over 25 years, Rebuilding Together has been bringing volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners. To date, they have served over 3.2 million people, are in the top 1% of all charities and have rebuilt over 1000 homes in New Orleans post-Katrina. Race2Rebuild was created in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy to support rebuilding efforts. In the first season, athletes have two opportunities to Race2Rebuild two homes for two families and this year Race2Rebuild will expand to race at least four major races around the country. Rebuilding Together in total has worked on 70 different Sandy-related projects. Approximately 300 additional projects await funding. Rebuilding Together focuses on helping rebuild homes for low-income families as well as the disabled, elderly, and veterans.
Race hard. Race with resolve. Race2Rebuild.
