EVENT: San Francisco Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Jul 27, 2014
I have made a commitment to raise $7,500. Last year you helped me raise $5,000 and in the spirit of reaching and pushing harder I have set my sites on pushing my goal to $7500. Please help me as I run once again in honor of my friend and mentor and ALCF Founder, Bonnie Addario and all families affected by lung cancer with a donation to my fundraising page. Last year, so many of you sent in donations and amazing stories about how your family was touched by lung cancer. While I have known you, I never knew your family journey with lung cancer. This disease is truly the silent disease.
I joined the ALCF team two years ago now and experience the inequities of this disease everyday. I will admit, like most, I didn't understand that anyone can get lung cancer or about the underfunding, the appalling survival rates, the stigmas and the death rates all shocked me while at the same time this inequity has inspired me to work harder and faster as well as to challenge myself with this half marathon and raise money and awareness. Everyone needs to know that lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer. It kills more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, melanoma and kidney cancers combined. Yet, for every $16 dollars spent on breast cancer research in America, only $1 is dedicated to lung cancer. The underfunding of lung cancer research has kept its survival rate at 16.1%, as low as it was in 1971. These statistics are disheartening and make a compelling case that the funding of lung cancer research needs to be greatly increased. It is for these reasons that I am asking for your support. Now more than ever, lung cancer patients and families need assistance.
HOPE IS ON THE WAY! Since its inception in 2006, ALCF has raised over $14 million, allocating $9.5 million to delivering and developing patient education programs and over $4.5 million awarded in research grants and programs. Please visit www.ALCMI.net to read more about our sister -organization, the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI) and learn more about two research studies underway, INHERIT and the Genomics of Young Lung Study.
No donation is too small (or big!) An amazing 90% of all monies raised through the ALCF Marathon Program go directly to research and patient programs. The ALCF is an amazing foundation, whose goal is urgent – to significantly improve the inexcusably low survival rate of lung cancer in patients and ....with an ultimate goal ....to make lung cancer a chronically managed disease by 2023.
Join my Team and come train with me. My motivation is to always have a glass of wine ready at the end of the run!
