Acadia Family Center (AFC) is a nonprofit organization which provides education, prevention and treatment services for adolescents, individuals and families affected by substance use, chemical dependency, and related mental health disorders. For the past 33-years we have been the resource for recovery on Mount Desert Island, the outer islands and surrounding communities.
Our outpatient treatment agency in Southwest Harbor offers a variety of counseling services for addiction and related mental health disorders in a supportive and caring environment. Our philosophy is recovery oriented, client centered and strengths based using both traditional, alternative and expressive arts therapies. We also provide no cost assessments and weekly group counseling at Mount Desert Island High School, counseling services at College of the Atlantic, and serve the outer islands via telehealth.
We provide extensive strengths-based education and prevention programming to empower students. By the time an island student enters Mount Desert Island High School they will have received between six and ten weeks of intensive, interactive and informative prevention classes by licensed alcohol and drug counselor, Kip Young.
AFC knows that it takes the coordinated involvement of all members of a community to effect real and lasting change. Our outreach, and resiliency and motivational interviewing seminars and trainings bring together the critical partners inour prevention, treatment and recovery mission (parents, youth, educators, law enforcement, healthcare providers, treatment providers, and community members). When we all work together toward a common goal, the community grows in health and supportive connection.
