When you watch the NYC Marathon and see physically challenged athletes using their arms to propel themselves on pushrim or hand-crank wheelchairs through the course, those are Achilles athletes. The people running with a tether between them? Those are visually impaired or blind Achilles athletes. Amputees, people with MS or CP, recovering from organ transplants, cancer, or living with diabetes -- these are all Achilles athletes.
The mission of Achilles International is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics in order to promote personal achievement, enhance self esteem, and lower barriers to living a fulfilling life. All kinds of good things follow when people feel good about themselves and Achilles volunteer guides and athletes look forward to the inspiration and encouragement they find in each other.
Our core sport is long-distance running and our programs focus on the training and dedication required to set goals and meet them. Triathlon, Duathlon, and Kayak competitions broaden the programs available in NYC and Achilles Kids brings the joy of exercise and self-expression to school-aged populations.
Achilles has more than 70 chapters in over 43 countries worldwide. Join our team or make a donation! Please help us continue this important work. And when you see us in the Marathon, give a cheer "Go Achilles!"
