Team Alex Race for Charity
Organized by: Alex Constantopoulos
EVENT DATE Oct 04, 2014
Hi! My name is Alex Constantopoulos, and I am a 41 year old married, father of one. About nine years ago, I was diagnosed with COPD which, as one might guess, was a diagnosis that came as quite a shock. Having been smoke free for more than two-and-a-half years, I decided I needed to become the epitome of health...and I needed to start yesterday!
I further discovered that my COPD was caused not only by my former smoking habit, but also by a genetic condition called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, or "Alpha-1." It occurs when the Alpha-1 Antitrypsin protein (AAT) in the blood is lacking, eventually causing liver and lung damage/diseases (more information can be found at http://alpha-1foundation.org/what-is-alpha-1/).
After a spending quite some time receiving bi-weekly intravenous replacement therapy, I decided I did not want to be defined by my limitations so, at the beginning of this year I assisted my wife while she worked at a Life Coach workshop which helped me see that I, alone, possessed the ability to accomplish what I wanted.
I decided to dedicate my life to not only getting well and experiencing the joys of life with my family, but to help others in doing so, as well. So, after quite a bit of research, I came upon the Spartan Race Workout(s) of the Day. If you are not familiar with Spartan Races, this video does a great job in explaining them: http://youtu.be/cSTNXTyBNMA
After several months of training, I was able to complete the DC Spartan Sprint in July, 2014 and the VA Spartan Super at Wintergreen Ski Resort in August, 2014. I finished nowhere near first place, but my goals of not quitting and simply finishing the races, no matter what, were accomplished.
Now, to the point; I am entered in the Spartan Beast taking place in Cumberland, OH on October 4, 2014 (via volunteering my time at the Philadelphia Spartan Sprint in September, 2014) and would like to run this race for a cause, with donations going to the Alpha-1 Foundation. While my gracious friends and family were able to assist with logistics concerning the first two races, I now turn to you to ask for your generous assistance with the third, but hopefully not final, leg of this journey.
My goal with this fundraiser is $700 (the minimum donation I'd like to post to the Alpha-1 Foundation is $500), with only $200 of the balance for logistical purposes (motel, gas, etc.). All donations above and beyond logistical expenses will be donated by me directly to the Alpha-1 Foundation. Full financial transparency on my part will be conducted, with any and all receipts immediately provided upon request!
To make things fun, I want to conduct activities to provide incentive for folks to give what they can, with direct input from those interested. Should I dye my hair Spartan Beast green when we reach $100? Shave my head when we reach $500? Write your name/company name on my arms/clothes for high dollar donation amounts?
I would like to say, bluntly, the absolutely fantastic people who work for, and support, the Alpha-1 Foundation and Spartan Race quite literally saved my life, and it is high time I paid it forward; with your help, we can MORE than do so! Thank you, in advance, for your generosity you see fit to provide...and maybe I'll see you on a course soon!
As we Spartans are not ashamed to loudly say, AROO! AROO!! AROO!!!
With Humble Appreciation,
