THE STORY:

Our dear friends' Hector & Lucy's son Alfred was diagnosed with Down Syndrome shortly after he was born. Understanding of DS has advanced enormously in recent years; life expectancy has increased from just 12 in the 1960s to 65 today, and many people with DS grow up to have very fulfilled lives. As an example, Alfred has a hole in his heart; 30 years ago this would have been undetected until too late, 10 years ago would have needed open heart surgery, but today can be treated as a day case. There have also been tremendous advances in understanding the genetic basis of some of the characteristics of DS, as genomes have been sequenced and neuroscience techniques have advanced. However, there is still a long way to go – the majority of people with DS develop Alzheimer’s disease in their 30s or 40s and most still face huge challenges in living independent lives. Meanwhile, research into DS is seriously underfunded, with less than £50 spent on research per person (compared to an estimated £1,800 for cystic fibrosis)(1). Our hope is to change that – The Lumind Foundation and Down Syndrome International aim to stimulate biomedical research that will accelerate the development of treatments to significantly improve cognition, including memory, learning and speech, for individuals with Down syndrome so they: participate more successfully in school lead more active and independent lives, and avoid the early onset of Alzheimer's Disease Obviously we have a very close personal interest, but we do think it is a fascinating area of research, in which the amazing advances of recent years in genetics, neuroscience and pharmacology mean that major progress is tantalizingly close. The research has been woefully underfunded but they are really on to something. We really do believe that some of the research supported by Lumind & DSI will have a big impact on Alfred's life, and others like him. - James & Elizabeth
