BENEFITING: AMERICA SCORES
ORGANIZER: AMERICA SCORES
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
As you probably know, I've played soccer my whole life. I also studied English Literature in college and after graduating, participated in possibly too many AmeriCorps national service programs. So when I first heard about America SCORES - an after-school program for inner-city kids that combines soccer, poetry, and service-learning - I needed to get involved.
Now, having worked at America SCORES Boston for two and a half years, this year I have the privilege of running my first Boston Marathon and raising money that will help bring the SCORES Program to over 1,000 Boston youth.
I have personally seen the power of this program: the smile on kids faces on game day when they wear their team jersey; the confidence earned by a student standing on-stage in front of 400 people and proudly reciting an original poem; and the sense of community realized by teams who spent weeks collecting supplies and donations for a local shelter.
Through soccer, self-expression, and service, the SCORES Program provides tremendous learning and development opportunities that empower students to lead healthy lives and be engaged students – opportunities that would not be available without the work of America SCORES Boston.
Soccer, writing, and service have afforded me the chance to stay active, form lifelong friendships, and learn the value of hard work and a sense of social responsibility. That’s why I am committing to bringing this same experience to kids in the Boston Public Schools through the city’s greatest annual event – the Boston Marathon.
My goal is to raise $2,500, which is an amount that allows five students to enjoy ten weeks of soccer practices and games, creative writing workshops, and the chance to celebrate their season with an interscholastic end-of-season soccer tournament.
Your individual donation will:
$25: Purchase notebooks and pencils for an entire team of SCORES students
$50: Give a SCORES poet-athlete their own shorts, jersey, and shinguard
$100: Supply equipment for a SCORES team's service project
$250: Provide transportation for one team to get to their weekly soccer game
$500: Pay for one SCORES participant's season of soccer and writing
