Hello everyone!! As some of you may know, or may just be finding out, I have been selected to run the Boston marathon for the America SCORES charity. Yes, you heard it right the Boston Marathon! This has been one of my life goals to be able to complete this race and with your help not only will I do it, but I can also give back to the community at the same time. I am trying to raise at least $5,000 for this outstanding charity. I will graciously accept any and all donations for this cause.
I'm sure you are wondering what is America Scores and what do they do to help the community? Well the mission of America SCORES Boston is to empower youth in Boston communities through an innovative combination of soccer leagues, writing, creative expression, and service-learning into a single after-school program. SCORES inspires Boston youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world. In the 2009-2010 season, Boston SCORES served 1,500 Boston public elementary and middle school students, ages 8-14, in after-school, summer and winter programming.
Keeping Kids Safe: America SCORES Boston keeps Boston youth safe and supervised during the high-risk after-school hours, and helps them develop the vital life skills they need to succeed in the future.
Promoting Health: Over the course of the SCORES program, SCORES elementary and middle school poet-athletes get the exercise they need by practicing and playing soccer 204 minutes per week and 240 minutes per week respectively.
Improving Literacy: According to an independent study undertaken by America SCORES, SCORES poet-athletes showed across-the-board improvement of their writing.
Fostering Community Leadership: After participating in the spring SCORES program, each SCORES poet-athlete will have created, designed, and implemented a service-learning project.
America SCORES Boston offers our unique after-school program to 3rd - 8th grade students in 12 Boston public elementary schools and 10 middle schools with 660 student-athletes at these schools participating on 44 teams. The program is divided into creative writing workshops, soccer practices, and one day a week is devoted to inter-scholastic soccer games against another SCORES team. The fall season lasts 8 weeks and the spring season is 10 weeks.
Through two annual events, Poetry Slam! and Voices, SCORES further inspires urban youth to share their experiences with others through creative writing. Our students have the opportunity to publish their work in Kicker!, a national literary magazine; Learning Kicks!, an anthology of students’ creative writing; and in the family newsletter, SCORES’ Scoop. Every spring a College Kicks event brings SCORES children to a university campus to work with college athletes to promote higher education as a goal. An end-of-the-year Jamboree! provides a culminating experience where all students celebrate their many accomplishments.
Why creative writing and soccer? Our program builds on the growing interest in the world’s most popular sport to bring a recreational and educational program to hundreds of urban youth in need of healthy activities and academic support during out-of-school time. Soccer is a sport that is fun, easy to pick up, and is extremely popular with many immigrant families. Teamwork skills learned on the soccer field are translated into a supportive atmosphere in the writing classroom. By combining the team sport of soccer with a specially designed program of creative writing, our programs promote leadership, teamwork, self-confidence and positive self-expression among urban young people.
America SCORES Boston employs over 70 Boston public school teachers as Writing and Soccer Coaches. Writing coaches receive training on our unique creative writing curriculum. Soccer coaches receive training in First Aid, CPR, and Sport Safety and are licensed by the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association.
What better fundraiser than one that helps with ensuring the success of our future and also helps give the teachers who already do so much for our children a little extra spending money. (We all know teachers don't get paid enough) Thank you for helping me achieve my life goal and for helping set up less fortunate children up for success.
