BENEFITING: Daraja Education Fund
EVENT DATE: May 17, 2015
"I aspire to be a lawyer."
Of seven children in her family, Antonella is the sixth. When both of her parents died in 2009, her older brother took on the responsibility of caring for Antonella and her siblings. Even though she was the top student in her 8th grade year, she was forced to repeat because she could not afford secondary school fees.
In Kenya, the government only pays school fees through Primary school (K-8). Countless bright, eager students aren't able to continue their education due to financial hardship. Antonella is one of those students.
Antonella loves to play netball and volleyball during sports time on campus and she says she’s found her best friends here at Daraja. Antonella is among the top of her class in academic scores nearly every term and works very hard in class and during study hall. Although shy at first, Antonella is full of clever jokes and unwavering kindness. What she loves most about Daraja are the teacher and friends she can call family.
At Daraja, the students help “pay” for their education by fulfilling community service hours during school breaks. During breaks, Antonella volunteers at a community hospital where she helps clean the facility and tend to patients.
Please consider supporting Antonella as she runs to raise money for her own education on May 17th in Kenya, while we race in the annual and historic San Francisco Bay to Breakers.
