I'm running to help raise funds for the Nancy Ratliff Medical Fund and The ALS Association. ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually attacks both upper and lower motor neurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. It is a horrific disease.
My sweet, sweet grandma DeHart died of ALS in 1994 and I plan to run this race in her honor and memory.
My first time running this race was last year in 2013 and I have two goals: 1) To raise $1,000 ($200 more than last year) to help fuel research and the awarenes necessary to finding a cure for this cruel disease and 2) To beat my 5K time for my Grandma.
NEW THIS YEAR: Did you know that ALS eventually paralyzes the muscles of the limbs and trunk, as well as those that control vital functions such as speech, swallowing and breathing?
I'm proposing a challenge for myself: When I reach my goal of $1,000, I will go an entire day without speaking. No talking at all.
If you know me, you know this is going to be REALLY difficult. But I'm going to do it, because it's only for one day and pales in comparison to what those fighting this disease go through.
I thank you so much for all of your support! It means the world to me and the people and family this terrible illness affects.
