For about as long as I can remember, it has been my dream to be a doctor. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to live out this dream working in Boston at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and at the Cambridge Health Alliance. For a long time, I have also had the goal of running a marathon, and this year I am finally going to do it! I am running the Boston Marathon and raising money to support BIDMC.
Nobody wants to go to the hospital, but if you have to, BIDMC is the type of hospital that you want to go to. The doctors, nurses, therapists and support staff are incredibly talented, passionate, committed, and dedicated. After I graduated medical school, I spent my first year as a doctor (intern year) working at BIDMC. During intern year the hours can be very long, and the work can be stressful, emotional, challenging, and rewarding all at once. During this year on countless occasions, I saw immensely talented and bright people at their absolute best-- going above and beyond, when they did not know that others were looking, to provide thoughtful and compassionate medical care for others in need. I made friends for life during that year, and when I finished my training in dermatology I was thrilled to have the opportunity to return to Boston and BIDMC where I have been working over the past year. Now I am a member of the Department of Dermatology where I am humbled and honored to work alongside a tremendous group of accomplished and brilliant colleagues who I continue to learn from on a daily basis.
Running for BIDMC gives me an opportunity to give back to an institution that has given me very much. It is also an institution that has been a world leader in many aspects of healthcare including healthcare quality and healthcare delivery . Groundbreaking research is unfolding here every day, in areas such as HIV vaccination and immunotherapy for cancers. It is truly amazing what can be accomplished when people combine their skills and talents for the benefits of others and I know that any contribution made to support the cause will be put to very meaningful use.
I am very proud to be running the 2015 Boston Marathon for team BIDMC and thank you very much for taking the time to consider donating.
BIDMC depends on the Annual Fund to fulfill its mission of providing compassionate patient care.
This fund raises unrestricted dollars that can be used immediately for a wide range of needs. They provide a reliable, steady source of funding for the programs that need it most:
- Promising research projects, such as cancer genetics investigations
- Annual operating costs, such as funding for social worker positions
- Career development opportunities for staff, such as continuing education scholarships for nurses
- Expansion of clinical spaces, like minimally invasive surgery suites
- Academic and teaching programs, such as fellowships for the next generation of physicians in growing service lines
