Continuing a BlackRock tradition, 12 employees from across the firm will participate in the 15th annual Safaricom Marathon and Half Marathon. The annual race, which takes place on June 28th, is run through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, Africa and raises funds for Tusk Trust.
This is the 7th year that BlackRock has participated in what Running World Magazine considers one of the 10 most grueling and difficult races in the world. Temperatures regularly reach over 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the race course approaches an altitude of 6,000 feet at points. The course is set on dirt roads that take the runners on a 13.1 mile course through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, across savannah plains, along river banks and through acacia woodland before finishing at Lewa’s headquarters.
Tusk and Lewa have always worked to use wildlife conservation as a catalyst to alleviate poverty, reduce conflict and improve education and livelihoods in rural areas rich in biodiversity. This annual event has had an immense impact on the communities in Kenya and has raised almost $4 million.
As one of the largest corporate sponsors, BlackRock has raised close to $1 million in the 7 years it’s participated in the race and those funds have not only gone to conservation and anti-poaching efforts, but also to help fund several schools and water projects in and around the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. This year the team has high hopes for its fundraising efforts.
