Why did I join a football team to fight and fundraise for a Alzheimer's cure?
Two years ago a friend of mine told me his mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers. This broke my heart. I could not imagine how he felt, how she felt, or how her husband felt. She was so young, in her early 50's. It hit home then once I realized our mothers were the same age. I thought Alzheimer's, and all other forms of dementia, were a concern after the age of 80? Apparently not. There was a man diagnosed at the early age of 38; click here to read his story http://site.macleans.ca/longform/alzheimers/.
I do not want to see my mom, dad, or grandmother affected with this disease. I do not want to get this disease. I do not want you get this disease. I am only one person, and my involvement may only make a small ripple, but with enough small ripples we can create a wave. Hopefully, one that knocks out Alzheimer's.
African proverb: "If you think you are too small to make a difference, try spending the night in a closed room with a mosquito".
THE GOAL: To tackle Alzheimer's and end this neurodegenerative disease that affects not only the host, but the loved ones.
With your help, BvB Dallas has been able to raise over $2.3 Million Dollars for Alzheimer’s research and care in North Texas over the past 8 years. But it’s not enough. A staggering 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s Disease today, which will cost the nation over $236 BILLION in 2016 alone. 100% of your donation to BvB Dallas will go directly to those living with Alzheimer’s, and those fighting to find a cure.
What exactly is BvB?
BvB (Blondes versus Brunettes) Dallas is a powder-puff football game and fundraiser hosted for a day of fun, fellowship, philanthropy and enjoyment as a way of raising money for Alzheimer’s Disease research and awareness. Founded by sisters whose father was afflicted by Alzheimer’s, BvB is a personal way for young professionals across the country to raise awareness, funds and support to TACKLE ALZHEIMER’STM FOREVER. BvB Dallas has been the most successful game on and off the field, raising more than $2.3 million and recruiting over 1,000 volunteers for the cause.
1. Each player has to raise $1,200 by game day to be eligible to play. My personal goal is to double the $1,200.
2. Yep. We really practice. And it is not easy! Football practice is at every Wednesday evening (no matter how hot it is) from June 1 to August 10th. I have a whole new level of respect for football.
3. Game day is August 13th, a Saturday, at the Cottonbowl and it will be televised!
Who's fighting to find a cure/receiving BvB Dallas donations?
1. Baylor Neuroscience Center:
BvB Dallas will be funding research with the goal of developing a blood or urine screen to detect Alzheimer’s vulnerability years before symptoms occur.
2. Center for Brain Health, The University of Texas at Dallas:
Findings from the Center for BrainHealth’s 2014 study, partially funded by BvB Dallas, suggest that strategy-based cognitive training may have a far-reaching impact on improving cognitive function for those with mild cognitive impairment, often labeled as the precursor for Alzheimer’s disease. Due to the successes from this initial study, BvB is funding Phase 2 of this study in 2016 by adding brain stimulation and advanced brain imaging.
3. Southwestern Medical Center:
BvB Dallas is funding a Clinical Neuropsychology Fellowship for the Alzheimer’s Disease Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
