BENEFITING: BIG D POWDERPUFF TACKLING ALZHEIMERS INC
ORGANIZER: BIG D POWDERPUFF TACKLING ALZHEIMERS INC
When I was 9 years old, I experienced the debilitating effects of dementia first hand as my Nanny started a long journey down a road of cognitive decline. Though my Nanny’s neurological functions have diminished, her body has continued to press on for 16 years.
My nanny's story is not unique. In the US, there are roughly 6.5 to 8 million people suffering with a form of dementia, and of those, more than 5 million have Alzheimer's. I’m so happy to be “Tackling Alzheimer’s” with BvB Dallas. The organization has raised over $1.8 million to fund local Alzheimer research in DFW.
One of the beneficiaries this year is UT Southwestern. This is particularly close to my heart since I work for UT Southwestern and know many of the team members who provide neurological care and the exemplary research conducted by our organization. Specifically, BvB will fund a Ph. D. clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral fellowship at UTSW and will provide training in research and patient treatment related to Alzheimer’s disease.
There is much undiscovered about the underlying disease processes involved with and contributing to dementia. I feel fortunate to be part of BvB’s fundraising efforts and also to work for UT Southwestern that is relentlessly working to advance the scientific knowledge surrounding neurological diseases. By adding to the current body of work, these efforts can ultimately result in how our practitioners treat dementia and help us work towards a cure for this disease that affects so many people.
BvB has a goal of comprehensively raising $500,000 as an organization, a $150,000 goal for Team Blonde, and I have an individual goal of raising $2,000 to go towards this cause that I care so deeply about. I would greatly appreciate any donation, small or large, to help “Tackle Alzheimer’s”! However, a $25 donation will get you a ticket into the football game on August 13th at the Cotton Bowl!
