BENEFITING: BIG D POWDERPUFF TACKLING ALZHEIMERS INC
ORGANIZER: BIG D POWDERPUFF TACKLING ALZHEIMERS INC
I have spent most of my free time this summer working with an organization that is having a HUGE impact. BvB Dallas is a young-professionals organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for Alzheimer's disease. Each year, the organization hosts a number of different fundraising events including happy hours, pool parties, charity dinners, a benefit concert and a powder-puff football game at the Cotton Bowl. This past weekend the organization put on an auction that earned $31,000 in a single night! The organization consists of many different volunteers. The Board of directors is a group of nine past participants who work to ensure everything runs smoothly year round. Team Blonde and Team Brunette are made up of about 100 participants each; females play flag football and males coach. Each player and coach must raise a minimum of $1,200 to be active on Game Day. Game Day is set for Saturday, August 13th at The Cotton Bowl in Fair Park! I have been out in the 100 degree heat for 3 hours every Wednesday for the past 10 weeks ensuring that the game will be a good show! BvB Dallas has set a lofty goal of $500,000.00 for the summer and cannot wait to hand over some big checks!
Azheimer's Disease is a really big jerk. If you have never experienced the anguish of watching a loved one lose themselves to this disease -count yourself as lucky. Alz's Disease kills more people each year than Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer COMBINED; yet alzheimer's research gets 6% of the funding that cancer does. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only one in the top ten that cannot YET be prevented, slowed or cured
How are we fighting alzheimer's and what institutions are we giving the proceeds to? The following institutions and their projects were carefully vetted by our Board of Directors:
Baylor Neuroscience Center - BvB Dallas will be funding research with the goal of developing a blood or urine screen to detect Alzheimer’s vulnerability years before symptoms occur.
Center for Brain Health - Findings from the Center for BrainHealth’s 2014 study, partially funded by BvB Dallas, suggest that strategy-based cognitive training may have a far-reaching impact on improving cognitive function for those with mild cognitive impairment, often labeled as the precursor for Alzheimer’s disease. Due to the successes from this initial study, BvB is funding Phase 2 of this study in 2016 by adding brain stimulation and advanced brain imaging.
Southwestern Medical Center - BvB Dallas is funding a Clinical Neuropsychology Fellowship for the Alzheimer’s Disease Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
I have gotten the chance to visit with many of the doctors and researchers working on these projects throughout the season. Seeing the progress they have made and their vision for the future has given me so much hope! Game Day is in a little under two weeks and I would love for you to come out to the game! A 25$ donation = 1 ticket to the game, 50$ = 2 tickets, and so on. The ticket also gets you into the after party for all the friends and family that have supported us! I am still about $1000 away from my personal goal so your donation to my page through the secure link below would be GREATLY appreciated!
I sincerely thank you for love, support, and generosity!
