THE STORY:

Brigham and Women’s mission melds with my own in three important ways:

1. I had a heart problem solved by Brigham and Women's:

At 7lbs 11oz, I began panting heavily or not breathing at all the day after I was born. My lungs were filling up with fluid, and I was suffocating myself. However, thanks to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I was quickly diagnosed with PDA, and the necessary operation was performed without a glitch.

2. I am from Lawrence:

I am a proud 28 year old product of Lawrence, MA, yet part of growing up in my city has meant being aware of poverty's realities. And for this reason, I am encouraged by the way B&W is addressing domestic violence, as it has been proven to be both a cause and an effect of poverty.

  • $2,500- one year of support groups for domestic violence survivors
  • $7,500- supplies victims of domestic violence and their children with food, clothing, transportation, changes in apartment/home locks, rental and utilities assistance, and more…

3. I will be a high-school teacher:

As a grad student en route to teaching high school, Brigham’s Student Success Jobs Program ties directly into my own career goals, because I believe that although helping people whose circumstances have rendered them helpless is a noble cause, helping people to change their circumstances is a reason to train for a marathon:

  •  $3,000 provides 15 high school juniors in the SSJP intensive monthly workshops and personal consultation to prepare their college applications, apply for financial aid, and make informed decisions about where to attend college.
  • $5,000 provides back-to-school clothing for approximately 100 children whose mothers are victims of domestic violence.

Thank you for helping me to run the Boston Marathon,

and for supporting a great cause.
