BENEFITING: Brigham and Women's Hospital
ORGANIZER: Brigham and Women's Hospital
EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2013
This spring, I will be running (or walking/crawling/carried) across the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon as a member of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital marathon team.
Even though I’m not a huge fan of running, being in the cold, wearing spandex or group exercise, I am very excited to have this privilege because I will be running in honor of my older brother, Mike, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in November 2007, and went into remission in June of 2008. I will also be running in memory of my grandmother, Frances Chory, who fought pancreatic cancer for 5 long years. I am so thankful for the cancer research that has allowed my brother to continue living a healthy and happy life, and allowed my grandmother to live long enough to watch her grandchildren grow. (To the left are photos of my brother and I, and my grandmother.) While I run, I will also be thinking of my cousin, Tommy, (pictured on left with his daughter Georgia), who passed away at 38 after a long battle with cancer.
There is a good chance that someone you love has had or will have cancer and I believe it is important to support the work of the people who are striving to prevent, treat, and cure this awful disease. My goal is to raise as much support as I can for the remarkably innovative research of Yolonda Colson, MD, PhD, at BWH.
Dr. Colson’s research is focused on using nanoparticles to stop tumor cells from spreading and to shrink existing tumors. These nanoparticles travel through the body to deliver chemotherapy to kill hidden tumor cells, and they also remain within the lymph nodes and at the tumor sites much longer than standard chemotherapy, resulting in better tumor control. It has the potential to stop many kinds of cancer from spreading before it is too late and to save thousands of lives that would otherwise be cut short by cancer. Any gift, no matter how big or small, helps her work progress faster so patients can see life-changing results sooner.
Thank you so much for your support!! Please feel free to forward this along to anyone you think would like to donate. And please don't forget to check if your employer has any matching programs!
