As some of you know, I am a mentor to Rose, a senior at Bronx Prep, through an incredible organization called iMentor. The program matches mentor volunteers with high school students in low-income communities and provides content to encourage students to attend and graduate college. iMentor also provides mentors with the tools to guide their mentees through high school, college applications, and the transition to college. The Online Donor Drive is an annual fundraiser throughout the month of March to raise money for iMentor. Please help me in supporting this incredible organization by making a donation (click on the orange "Donate" button).
About Rose & Me
Rose and I were matched in September 2011. I knew we were going to get along well as soon as I realized we both shared a deep-rooted passion for food, especially Crumbs cupcakes (her favorite is red velvet, I like just about all of them). She knew we were a great mentor-mentee match when we discovered we were both born in November (she's the 5th, I'm the 24th)!
Over the course of the past year and a half, I've learned a lot about Rose and her family, culture, passions, fears and friendships. Along the way, Rose has learned about where I'm from and the path I took to get to where I am now. This year we've been really focused on preparing for the SATs, writting college application essays, and applying for financial aid and scholarships. It's exciting to see her hard work start to pay off -- she recently found out she was accepted to two colleges! I'm really proud of her and can't wait to see where she decides to go to college next year.
My Fundraising Goal: $1,000
It costs $1,000 a year to support one mentor-mentee pair and ensure they have access to quality programming and resources. I hope to raise at least that amount with your help. Every dollar brings us that much closer to my goal!
iMentor builds mentoring relationships that empower students in low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions.
Students and mentors work one-on-one through iMentor’s online and in-person curriculum to navigate the college application process and build critical skills linked to college success. In New York City, iMentor partners with public schools to ensure every student in the school receives a mentor.
Since 1999, iMentor has connected 11,000 students in New York City with mentors, and will match more than 2,400 mentor-mentee pairs this year. iMentor also provides its curriculum, technology, and best practices to nonprofits nationwide to help them run effective mentoring programs in the iMentor model. iMentor has been recognized through funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and the Robin Hood Foundation, and is a subgrantee of the federal Social Innovation Fund.
