Have you ever had to fight against something on a daily basis that you know you couldn't win against?
More than 5 million Americans face that reality everyday. Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States.
If you haven't looked at my photos, take a peek! That adorable 91 year old man is my Papa. Papa has lived an incredibly full life, growing up with his best friend Bob, in Waco, building their own (not always fully functional) boats. Attending Texas A&M, waking up early to warm the "seats" for upperclassmen. Piloting in the war. Marrying the love of his life, Miss Betty Jean. Graduating from Baylor Law School. Adopting the two most perfect children, Stephen and Stacey. Having an amazing career with Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Spoiling the hell out of his 5 adorable grandchildren! He has always been my hero, even before I really realized what that meant. Even though he is becoming more fragile with age, he is a spit fire and the strongest man I have ever known. He lives in his own home, drives his brand new car, and he has decided i'm old enough finally to hear all the good stories! In 2012 I watched him lose his best friend of 50 years, twice. Ben and Grace McHenry have been Papa's closest friends for half a century, Ben knew all of Papa's good stories too, he had lived most of them with him! Ben began his fight with Alzheimer's and Papa had to sit by as his best friend slipped further and further away. It was years that Mr. McHenry remained after Ben was gone. Finally, we lost Ben the second time. Watching Papa give his best friends eulogy was the toughest thing I've ever had to watch.
I thank God everyday that Papa hasn't had to fight Alzheimer's, but when 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimers or another dementia i'm afraid that he hasn't had to fight Alzheimer's YET!
Please join me in raising awareness and financial support for the fantastic Alzheimer's research we are doing in Dallas as it leads us into finding way to slow, cure, and hopefully prevent Alzheimer's altogether!
Let's do it for those we love, and those we don't want to lose! Help me do it for Papa!
