THE STORY:

In March of 1992 at the age of 23, a year before she was married, she was diagnosed with a low grade primary cancerous brain tumor. She had a craniotomy at NYU Medical Center followed up with a 6 week course of radiation at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. After her treatment she returned to work as a pediatric nurse at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital. In March of 1993 she and Artie were married. The had to wait 7 years before starting their family to make sure she was okay and was off all anti-seizure medicine. For 17 years her life went on as all of ours do. She has 3 beautiful daughters Casey, Emma and Kate and lives in Long Island. But in 2009 she started experiencing symptoms that something again could be wrong. She was having difficulty with her speech and had periods of blackouts. Her tumor is in the part of the brain that provides the structural backbone of the brain and support the function of thought, sensation, muscle control, and coordination. On the early morning of March 29, 2010, she was rushed by ambulance to her local ER after having a long lasting seizure. She started back on the anti-seizure medicine but even worse, the MRI showed that there was a new tumor in the same area that she had 17 years prior. On July 7, 2010, she had her second craniotomy at NYU to remove the tumor which was a more aggressive grade III Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma with a poorer prognosis. Three weeks later the left side of her face, her left arm and hand became paralyzed. The MRI showed a massive hematoma and infection. She had an emergency craniotomy on August 1, 2010 and was sent home with a PICC line (central catheter) for a 6 week course of IV antibiotics which delayed the treatment of her cancer. In October 2010 after her PICC line was removed, she began a 1 year cycle of temodar which is oral chemotherapy and scans every 2 months. And again, life went on. Until May of 2012 when one of her regularly scheduled MRIs showed another tumor.  Failed temodar had recurrence in November 2012 after repeated MRI for confirmation and PET scan to rule out necrosis due to radiation received in 1992 when tumor progression was confirmed a 3rd surgery was performed on Feb. 7 2013 with an awake craniotomy because tumor is on R motor strip. Followed by. 5 week course of targeted radiation therapy which was started within 6 weeks post-surgery due to growth at tumor site within that time followed by four cycles of temodar which has now been stopped due to further tumor progression and now waiting to see if the tumor is operable due to location on motor strip or if there is another treatment option.

Marybeth lives her life to the fullest. You would never know she has been fighting cancer for 20+ years. She is the most fun-loving, supportive, energetic and caring wife, mother, sister, daughter, cousin, niece, aunt and friend. She has never asked for help and is always more concerned about how her cancer affects her family and friends than how it affects her. My family and I are constantly in awe of her grace and beauty and strength. She is truly amazing and an inspiration. As she continues her fight against her recurring brain tumors, I will be running 26.2 miles on Nov 3rd to honor her.

Anything you can donate to help us honor her would be greatly appreciated

Team BTF is proud to once again be participating in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 3, 2013. The Brain Tumor Foundation (BTF) guides and supports patients and families during the turbulent times when their lives are touched by a brain tumor.

Over a million people in the US are living with brain tumors that have not yet been detected.

It is estimated over 14,000 deaths are expected to occur this year due to brain tumors.

Possibly half of all brain tumor patients could have their tumors successfully removed if they were detected early, before physical symptoms become apparent. Early detection and complete removal is the best known method of treating deadly tumor growth.
