EVENT: 2013 Boston Marathon
Camp Harbor View (www.chvf.org) was founded in 2007 by Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Jack Connors, Jr. to provide a fun, safe environment for Boston youths to enjoy during the summer months. The camp offers close to 800 children ages 11 to 14 living in Boston’s at-risk neighborhoods the opportunity to leave the city during the day and participate in a four-week summer camp program, operated and staffed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston. Three square meals are served during the day, providing the campers with wholesome, organic food options.
Campers are picked up around the city first thing in the morning and delivered home in the evening tired, happy and fulfilled. In addition to classic summer camp activities such as swimming, biking, soccer, baseball, arts and crafts, basketball and tennis, each camper also experiences a wide variety of activities designed to build confidence, encourage creativity, broaden horizons, and help develop the leadership skills they need during school and life beyond. The Camp has collaborated with many different Program Partners in order to offer this diverse and exciting camp curriculum (http://chvf.org/about-the-camp/programs-and-partners/).
To ensure the campers receive a complete and well-rounded experience, Camp programming is based on five key areas of development:
1) Leadership Development
2) Knowledge Is power
3) Sports and fitness
4) The Arts
Once campers age out of the program, they are eligible to apply to the Camp Harbor View Leader-in-Training (LIT), a program for that keeps alumni campers ages 15-17 years old connected to the Camp. This program offers eight weeks of intensive leadership development and mentoring, job readiness, training, college preparation and fun, establishing a relationship that continues throughout the school year.
Beyond the summer, Camp Harbor View strives to continue and strengthen its relationship with all their campers and families by maintaining contact through monthly camper reunions, activities and The Camp Harbor View Parent Connection group. Thanks to their off-season location in Roxbury, the Camp can continue to serve as a resource for our campers, maintaining an important connection that supports them all year long.
Tuition for all of this fun, growth, support and development is $5.
The Camp is supported entirely by private funding, managed and run by the Camp Harbor View Foundation, a private, not-for-profit corporation
