As many of you know, I mentor a New York City high school student through iMentor, an organization that matches volunteers with students in low-income communities.
The ultimate goal of the program is for each student to graduate high school and get into college, two important steps in preparing him or her for a successful path through life.
I've had the opportunity to be matched with Alex, a junior at Bronx-based UA School for Careers in Sports, for the last year and a half. Alex is a great kid, a rising star outfielder on the Varsity baseball team with a cannon for an arm and a big bat in the middle of the lineup.
We are currently planning his college application game plan, including improving his grades, preparing for the SATs and exploring potential matches in the State and College University of New York public school systems and beyond.
It would mean a great deal to me and iMentor if you could contribute a small amount to support the development of more mentor-mentee pairs like Alex and me. Every $20 helps!
For folks based in NYC, please consider becoming a mentor as well. I've found the experience to be very rewarding and would be happy to talk more about the program.
