BENEFITING: Charities Challenge
ORGANIZER: Charities Challenge
Yes, it is true I am running 13.1 miles, that’s a half marathon….yikes, but it is in Maui January 20th….Yippy! Alas, I cannot do it without support, so please consider donating to Charities Challenge and read my story below:
My fitness journey began the month my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer Jan 2006. I was his main caregiver. My father had always been physically active his whole life; playing football, running track, distance running, lifting weights and then biking when his knees wouldn’t let him run anymore. I didn’t play any sports or workout, ever; except for an occasional bike ride with my mom. I would get winded walking up and down stairs and I had been overweight most of my adult life. I gradually gained weight after high school due to poor diet and lack of exercise. Then came my childbearing years, after 4 babies my body was stretched and worn out. At my highest I weighed 205lbs. I hovered around 189lbs for many years. So when my dad was hospitalized I made the conscious decision I would take stairs because my he couldn’t , I went to the Y and worked out for an hour every day because my he couldn’t, I lifted weights because he couldn’t. I slowly began to enjoy exercising and it was a way for me to honor my Father. He passed away on April 16th2006, he was 56, young and with a strong heart that didn’t want to stop beating. That August I did the 3day breast cancer walk. The longest distance I have ever done on foot with very little training, I was sore and exhausted, but it was my dad’s spirit that got me through the last miles.
I continued to go to the gym and put in my elliptical time and lift weights but was not achieving the results I wanted. I was dealing with depression and anxiety, low self-esteem issues, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In Sept of 2009 I discovered Kettlebells and instantly fell in love! It was the hardest workouts I had ever done and I loved the challenge. After a year of Kettlebells and losing 30+lbs, gaining muscle, losing inches and most of all gaining confidence and self-worth, I signed up for the RKC (Russian Kettlebell Challenge). I was terrified and never in my life had I trained for anything. I trained diligently for 4 months. The weekend of the RKC was the 4 year anniversary of my father’s death and I knew he was with me every step of the way. The fact that he would have been so proud fueled me the whole weekend.
I am an RKC Kettlebell instructor, NETA certified personal trainer and Certified Massage Therapist. I am in the best shape of my life, I continue to improve myself and love helping others achieve their goals, kicking their butts with a ketttlebell workout and instilling a confidence in them they didn’t know existed.
Running more than 3 miles is a new challenge for me. Never would I have ever thought I would be running a half marathon, I hate to run! So with that said, I run because my Dad cannot. I run for my husband to show him how strong I can be and my girls to show them they can achieve anything with due diligence. I run for my Mom who is my best friend, who never doubts anything I do and is my biggest supporter. I am inspired by the incredible women I am sharing this experience with. My goal is to run every mile, no walking!
I am running for Charities Challenge because they share the same passion for fitness that I do. Through fitness I have been able to overcome and manage obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression & anxiety. Exercise has changed me physically but most of all mentally. To be an ambassador for Charities Challenge is an honor. CC Mission: To improve health and fitness, reduce health risks and enhance chronic disease management through goal-oriented RxExercise training programs, events and services.
